Astaxanthin itself is not the problem. It comes from microalgae, it is one of the strongest antioxidants nature makes, and the research on how it supports skin, eyes, joints and hair is not thin.
The problem is which bottle you pick, and I found that out the expensive way. Over 12 months I bought five of the most recommended astaxanthin supplements I could find, $847 on my own card, and stayed on each one long enough to have an opinion worth typing.

This came closest to taking the top spot, and it got there on paperwork almost nobody in this category publishes. ClarityMD puts up an actual Eurofins report, and that report measured lot C26051301 at 13.6mg of total astaxanthin per serving against a 12mg label claim, so it over-delivers on its own number. What it won't tell you is where the algae comes from. No species, no origin, no branded raw material, and their own FAQ still has an empty placeholder sitting where the source is supposed to be. The 4.9 rating has no review count behind it either, and the every-batch testing I just credited rests on exactly one published lot. Neither is a dealbreaker, but a brand this careful with its lab work should have tidied both up by now.

The Verdict:
This is the only bottle in the test where I could trace exactly what I was swallowing. The label names its branded raw material (Astalif® Pure Icelandic, from ALGALIF), the organism behind it (Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae), the isomer ratio (99% biologically active 3S,3'S) and how it was extracted (solvent-free supercritical CO2). Nothing else I bought discloses that much.
It is also the cheapest per serving of anything I bought. $46.60 for 120 veggie softgels is $0.39 a day, or $0.35 on subscription, for one 12 mg softgel taken with a fat-containing meal. Halal, gluten-free, soy-free, 3rd Party Tested, GMP, iTested Verified, made in an FDA-registered facility that an outside auditor checks. What you do not get is a refund window, and since this is an iHerb listing the page warns your bottle may turn up in different packaging.
The Bottom Line:
On cost per serving, nothing in this test undercuts the 120-count, and the sourcing detail is the most complete of anything I bought. The product shows 4.7 from 47,219 ratings, but iHerb pools reviews across both pack sizes, so read that as a score for the softgel rather than for this bottle. Buy it if astaxanthin already suits you and four months up front does not bother you. If you want a stated refund period first, look higher up.

The 4.7 from 47,217 ratings is pooled across both pack sizes, so this listing has not earned that number on its own.

The Verdict:
The front of the pouch says 12mg, same as everything else I tested. Then you find the Supplement Facts panel, and the serving size is 4 softgels. Each one is 3mg. The directions say take 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening, and their own FAQ asks why 4 a day instead of 1 or 2 like other brands. So the 12mg is genuinely there, and Rovina isn't hiding the split, which I'll give them. What it costs you is four swallows a day out of a pouch of 60 that empties in 15 days. At $39.99 that lands near $2.67 a day, the most expensive way to take astaxanthin in the whole test.

Nothing about this one is a scam. You just pay more, and swallow more, to land on the same 12mg everything above it gets you in one softgel.
